The two weeks of Java was time well spent. Total 9 days. We had an excellent instructor. From CS students, knowledge of OOP was expected in our batch. Anyway, the pace was ok and we got quite a bit of time to practice for each of the 7 days on which there were training sessions. Plus another practice day. And then a day for the test.

Topics covered were Inheritance, Polymorphism, Packages and Interfaces, Object Serialization, Exception Handling, Multi Threading, I/O, Applets, Hashtables and Vectors, Strings, Socket programming, AWT – Controls & Event Handling & Layout Managers, JDBC.

Seen my previous post on the training? We got exactly what I mentioned there for the test! One program with AWT+JDBC concepts and another involving Multi Threaded Socket programming. Both programs needed to be completed within a total of 3 hours. Many people seemed to have had trouble perhaps due to insufficient practice. But everything asked in the test was clearly much EASIER than what we had expected. Questions were straightforward and unambiguous.

Our instructor, said he expected no less than 45/50 from us to pass by his “standards”. I think I might get there. A few others also seemed to have done pretty well and are on target for a good score. But others got stuck on silly mistakes and are likely to score low. My recommendation is to get practice. Lots of it.

Moving on, tomorrow we should get started on J2EE. That’s going to be the focus for the entire week. Five days of J2EE starting this Monday and a test on next Monday. J2EE is going to be an objective test of 30 marks. But it is a VERY vast topic. Probably there are going to be a lot of things to read in this week.

Looking forward to gain an insight into the design of Enterprise class systems in the coming week.
