Days 36-40 of training : Unix training, test. Training ends!

Index: Other posts on training in this series

For UNIX, we went through 3 days of classroom training and one day for practice. And yet another day for the test.

We did all the practice using a telnet connection to a Red Hat Linux machine. Only Vi was allowed to be used as an editor.

Topics covered included use of Vi, most of the basic UNIX commands, writing shell scripts in bash, using AWK etc.

The questions given for practice usually involved reading/writing records from a file with fields of fixed length or separated by a delimiter like colon or space. Producing output in the correct format as required was important. AWK had to be used in places to parse an input file and produce required output. Some places needed knowledge of how to perform basic mathematical operations in a shell script.

Most people found the test to be as expected in difficulty, but a bit too lengthy to be completed in the allocated time. So make sure you have enough practice and don’t get stuck in something too long. Shell scripts can have some fiendishly tricky syntax in places.

Those who have retests will now have them in the coming week. Then we have Process Training for a day. And then we will have Behavioral Training for 5 days.

For most of us, the technical training is finally over. Feels really great!

    It was about parsing text based files with cut/grep/awk etc. and to produce reports based on some criteria as far as I remember.

    Hello Sir,

    Thanks a lot for suggesting this book and also for such a quick reply..
    Actually i also want to know about what all things that would be covered in our complete training NOW like RDBMS, Testing.. The toughest of all to clear, the most time consuming(i know i shouldn’t be asking anything as such but still I want to know).

    Actually I have found some study material but its all jumbled up, so i was thinking that if i could know what all is in the training and how everything is scheduled, then i would be able to arrange that stuff and also get some books if required.

    Thanks in Advance

    @Kashish
    I really don’t have any current details.

    Remember, the training is supposed to teach all that you need anyway. So if you just pick a couple of subjects from Java, Unix, PL/SQL, then you are already doing a lot more than you need to.

    Respected Sir, thank you so much for sharing such detailed training info.I really got to know much about the training now.Sir,i am extremely tensed because i don’t have any knowledge on J2EE as i am bit inclined to .NET, so would you please suggest me how to equip myself for training especially in J2EE before joining. I shall be ever obliged.

  10. Onkar Joshi

    @Soumyasmita
    Be aware that these are my notes from 2006. 5 years ago!

    I you know Core Java, you will already know more than others.

    If you fancy .NET, make sure you tell your batch administrators at the right time.

    I did manage to ask for Java and get it myself when my batch was being assigned projects.

    Again, that’s from 5 years back! Good luck.

    Hey,
    thanks a lot for your indepth explaination of how training in an IT company works.But i wanted to know, in which city was this training done?
    Thanx and Regards

  18. raj

    Thank you for the information Sir.

    I have a doubt. For the practical exams, how should we prepare? I mean the questions which they teach in training, are those enough? aAnd the program has to be 100% correct for us to pass? or a small mistake is ok?

    Thank you.
